THE MOUNTAINS ON MY PATH
An intimate work, tracing, painting and sewing my personal story on paper. I imagine life as an infinite path, but ephemeral at the same time.Living with the Puruwa indigenous people in the highlands of Ecuador I learned how they shaped their history, their environment and their space: through the mountains in the landscape. Tayta (father) Chimborazo as in love with the beautiful Tungurahua volcano, and many symbolic anthropomorphic representations. There was a world behind the mountain, quite unknown, where fantasy came to shape a range of possibilities.
Thus the mountains represent a cultural narrative thread but are also essential for the person's location in the environment. Mountains become essential reference points in the physical, spiritual, symbolic and physical world.
In my drawings a symbolic and guiding type of mountain appears, a solid black shape. It goes from paths, lines and traces, to orientation points., landmarks. My origin as an anthropologist makes me want to interweave artistic practice with a more anchored, anthropological theory. In this project I am inspired (among others) by the work of the anthropologist Tim Ingold, Univeristy of Aberdeen. His research on ' lines' in all facets of human life allows for a very enriching vision.
