EN EXPANSIÓN - Guillermo Basagoiti

Centro de Escultura de Candás, Museo Antón, Spain — 2019

EN EXPANSIÓN is a sculptural project developed since 2016 that explores desire as a driving force, giving form to inner states of thought, intuition, and imagination through abstraction.
Through large-scale topological bodies, static or in transformation, the works evoke the human condition, its limits, tensions, and processes of change.
Materiality plays a central role, as rubber, expansion, contraction, and contrasting colors create a poetic language that reveals interiority, force, and transformation.

Curatorial text

EN EXPANSIÓN is a sculptural project that materializes and represents the most intimate impulses of man, desire as the motor of action. It has been developed since 2016.
The artist presents rudimentary forms capable not only of containing, but also of transmitting, representations of his own mind, imagination, intuition and reasoning. The morphology of the abstract allows us to search and where it is necessary to go beyond the real or imaginary limits within which we usually move.
Through different structures, images and sensations, the viewer is invited to immerse himself in the observation of a new imagery and also to embark on a journey to his own interior.

There are ´bodies´ of topological forms, large format, moving or static, contained or in the process of expansion, capable of containing and referring to the human condition. Some of them exceeding the limit of their own material structure to the point of transformation, thus allowing us to appreciate their interior. Audiovisuals lead us to consider the transforming property of force, the limit.

En Expansión is a project in development, where the material itself plays a very important role. Materiality is part of the language of this representation. Expanding and contracting, rubber is used to experiment with the different capacities and states of matter that make us up. The magenta glitter is part of the dichotomy, along with the deep black of the rubber, telling us about its possible interior. The contrast of materials and colors underlines its meaning. A multiplicity of techniques and forms allows the creation of a powerful world rooted in a poetic imaginary full of suggestion.
